✦ Galileo Galilei (Father of mordern science)
Galileo Galilei was born in Pisa, Italy. His father was a music teacher and he had his first lessons on the lyre when he was six years old. At 12 he was sent to study medicine at the University of Pisa, where he became interested in mathematics and physics. He started writing poetry and plays at 15, but left school because of poor results in physics courses. In 1604 he went to Padua to study law but soon became totally disillusioned with what he saw as a side track from his real interest in science.
✦ why Galileo was famous?
Galileo was renowned for his discovery of Jupiter's moons. He also discovered sunspots, the phases of Venus and several other significant observations of the night sky. All of these facts were communicated by him to others for many years leading up to the publication of both his telescope observations and the Dialogue on the Two Chief World Systems in 1632.
✦ Galileo telescope
Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) was part of a small group of astronomers who turned telescopes towards the heavens. After hearing about the "Danish perspective glass" in 1609, Galileo constructed his own telescope. He subsequently demonstrated the telescope in Venice.
✦ Galilean Moons of Jupiter
Jupiter has 80 moons. Four of them are known as Galilean Moons, named after Galileo Galilei who discovered them in 1610. They are Io (the most volcanically active), Europa, Ganymede and Callisto.
These four moons have no satellites of their own and are very close to Jupiter. They orbit the planet in retrograde motion, that is they travel eastward before turning westward again. Because they pass through Jupiter's magnetosphere, they also receive significant amounts of radiation from the Sun.
