Story of Dhaporshankh - The poor brahmin, the greedy trader, and the liar conch

Story of Dhaporshankh

Once a poor Brahmin used to feed himself and his family by begging. Somebody suggested to a Brahmin troubled by poverty, that you should go to the sea, the ocean is a mine of gems, o will give some gems to you, your poverty will go away. Hearing this, the Brahmin deity started towards the sea. After resting the night for many days, the brahmin reached near the sea.

After worshiping the ocean, the brahmin asked for money/ratnadi for his maintenance from the ocean.
The ocean thought of giving so much money to the Brahmin for his daily living that he could be maintained and not attached to the pleasures.

Thinking so, the ocean gave a conch shell (small conch) to the brahmin and said that take this conch shell after worshiping and if you request five rupees after blowing the conch, then it will give you five rupees. You can do this everyday.

The Brahmins left with great joy after bowing to the ocean. After a day's journey, he rested at night at a merchant's place. The Brahmin was curious that, what the ocean has said is correct or not, it should be tested. The Brahmin asked for flowers, water, etc. from the trader for evening worship.
Now the brahmin, after worshiping, begged five rupees from the conch shell. Shankhi(little conch shell) gave five rupees.

Seeing all this, the trader got greedy. The Brahmins was having a money-saving yantra as a conch shell that earns a living. Trader thought in my mind, how do I take this conch shell by deceit with the Brahmin. Then I will worship a lot throughout the day and by blowing the conch, I will become the richest citizen of the city.

Then he went to his priest's place and took his conch shell. After the Brahmin fell asleep, he changed the conch shell.

Now the Brahmin after coming home and after worshiping asks for five rupees from the conch shell, so the conch shell was not right which he would have got the money. Now the brahmin got angry on the sea and reached near the sea with a rebuke that you have given me a conch shell giving me five rupees only once.

Sea God heard the story of his journey from the sad Brahmin. When he said that I had stopped at a trader's place on the way, the sea god understood that the trader had cheated the brahmin. The kind ocean now gave a big conch to the brahmin and said that he should rest the night in the same house.

The greedy trader welcomed the Brahmin more this time. He felt that the brahmin does not know about our deceit or that in their worship they can get five rupees from a conch shell, otherwise why would they stay at our house.

After the evening worship, when the brahmin asked for five rupees from the conch shell, the conch said that why not you ask for 50 rupees.

Then when asked for ten rupees, the conch said that why don't you take five hundred rupees. In the same way, when the amount accumulated more to carry on, the Brahmin said that we will take it at home.

Now the trader was more astonished, this conch was more valuable than that conch. Without delay, he changed the little conch shell with the big conch shell.

Now the real conch had come to the brahmin, and the big one to the trader. The greedy trader simply told his wife, today I will also do evening worship. The trader prays for money by doing puja, and the conch shell lures him to give double. At last when the amount goes a bit more, then the trader say in anger, give me money. Now I do not want any more.
Then the conch said something like this in Sanskrit.

"पर हस्ते गदा शंखी पंच रूप्यक दायिनी , अहम् ढपोर शंखोस्मि वदामि न ददामि च "

"The real conch is with Brahmin now I am the Dhaporshankh(do the fals commitment). I will commit a lot but not give you a single coin.".
